Design 2 Print/Design 4 Print/OUGD201 Module Brief.

MODULE CREDITS: 20

Context

'Every practice has a set of rules which govern it. Mastery occurs with the realisation of these rules. Innovation occurs at the point of intelligent and creative rebellion against them'- Fiel Valdez- Lovely Brand.

There is a lot to know and understand about designing for print and print production- too much to deliver in the time available. The majority of what you will eventually understand as a designer for print distribution will come from being out there and doing it. However, for a designer, it is essential that you are aware of the fundamental principles, concepts, and skills involved. With a little knowledge you can:-

* Make informed decisions about the development of your ideas.
* Develop appropriate strategies for the investigation of design solutions to set problems.
* Produce increasingly professional resolutions through the use of established studio practices.
* Challenge the boundaries of what is achievable from a position of understanding.

ARMED WITH A GRASP OF THE BASIC PRINCIPLES YOU CAN ENSURE THAT YOUR MESSAGE IS DELIVERED AS INTENDED.

Brief

Studio briefs will be delivered throughout this module and will outline specific problems relating to the production of design solutions for printed media. In response to these briefs, you will produce a body of work that explores the practical issues that arise when designing for print based media and distribution.

The work that you produce will need to demonstrate an understanding of:-

* Practical and theoretical concepts, skills, technologies and practices concering print based design.
* Approaches to colour management in the production of print solutions (1 colour, 2 colour, and CMYK).
* The use of appropriate software, technologies and processes used in print production.
* Design practices appropriate to the use of print technologies and processes.
* Methods of developing, defining and investigate self-directed concepts in response to set problems.
* Primary and secondary methods of research and their use in gathering appropriate source material.
* Methods of critical analysis evaluation and reflection when organising and communicating your responses to source material.

In addition to the workshops and taught sessions you will be expected to demonstrate an increasingly independent approach to exploring, developing, and communicating message, content, practical, and contextual understanding through self-directed studio development and private study.
