Cosmo on Campus: Work Experience//Print.

Really pleased to get my hands on a copy of 'Cosmo on Campus' today (as found my friend and fellow designer Claudia, thank you!- though one is due to arrive in the post too!) and saw my design layout work that I executed on my day's work experience for the magazine in the summer at their Westminster studio. As well as having my Cosmo "house style" approved by the editor, an image of me with name and Uni is printed on the contents page (I'm on the bottom row,  second to the right!). Really pleased to see little alteration to my design and great to see my work commercially printed for the first time.

A great experience during this print-based design product- being so much more informed about the printing process is inspiring. I'm definitely going to send an e mail to request another work placement- I know, this time, I would be totally confident and anticipating the day's work.

ENTERPRISE TASK 2.

WHERE ARE MY POTENTIAL CLIENTS/EMPLOYERS LOCATED?

- I particularly want to work within the printed media sector, and in particular, working with education (specifically children). Potential clients/employers can be found:

- City/Town Councils
- Parents
- Schools
- Museums/Galleries
- Universities
- Colleges
- Specialist training (Teacher training, learning programmes, etc)
- Libraries

Largely, these locations will be found in major cities and large towns in CBD's (Central Business Districts) where visiting numbers are high, or a wide audience can be focused upon. Of course, in the case of schools and individual parenting families, the clients are located globally- and due to technological advances from the past twenty years in Internet technology, can be easily accessed and connected with.

WHAT MEDIA DO MY POTENTIAL CLIENTS/EMPLOYERS USE?

In the education sector, various forms of media are used- which would ensure that my practice would remain diverse and practically engaging for both myself and the client.
Printed media, traditionally, is the most common form of media found within the education sector- through wall chart displays, info graphic murals, and, of course, project books and manuals.
However, screen-based design is becoming all the more commonplace in the modern day classroom or museum, with increased pressure on financial restraints due to the global "double-dip" recession of recent years, along with the technological advances of screen-based interactivity, which continue to engage and expand their capabilities through audiences young and old.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO COMMUNICATE AND HOW DOES IT MATCH WHAT YOUR CLIENTS/EMPLOYER NEED?

I aspire to created published educational materials with both educational and visual engagement. Aware that not all children/adults can afford the latest technological device, I want to bridge the gap between traditional and modern learning- creating interactive media for both printed and screen-based learning.
Visually, I want to create a new, exciting and innovative way of learning- to engage all types of learners across a range of ages- to create beautifully designed, yet informative manuals, textbooks and project books to help engage learners, and to modernise otherwise dry and seemingly uninteresting subjects (maths, science, economics... to name a few...).
I feel there is great potential in the market for this type of learning- particularly for children and young adults. With more pressure than ever for "the future generation" to achieve success in education due to decreasing numbers of jobs, and the increase of University fees for graduates, it is important to enrich and encourage learning to ensure the greatest success in life- be it financial, personal, or professional.

TASK 2 SUMMARY//CLIENTS AND EMPLOYERS//THE FUTURE OF MY DESIGN PRACTICE

Upon graduating, I aspire to work in the field of Graphic Design- specialising in creating educational material, focusing on study and visual engagement in equal measure. With a particular focus of designing for children and young adults, I hope to create a cross-neuro-linguistic learning experience, engaging kinaesthetic, visual and auditory (utilising Fleming’s VAK/VARK model) learners with memorable and innovative designs.

Enterprise Task 2- Where are they- How will they find me?

TASK

Based on the principles that have been introduced so far in the Enterprise module, as well as the previous tasks, investigate, analyse and critically evaluate where your potential clients are located. You will need to consider the following questions:

* Where are my potential clients/employers located?
* What media do my potential clients/employers use?
* What do you need to comunicate and how does it match what your clients/employer need?

Analyse and compare these examples in relation to the Political, Economic, Social and Technological (PEST analysis) factors that affect their use of graphic design, choice of designer and trends that influence their decisions regarding graphic design.

Once you have done this, summarise your findings by focusing on 1 example and discussing how the clients location and/or use of media will affect what you need to communicate to them, and how to go about doing this.

This is an excercise in exploring and applying PEST analysis and related theories- it is not appropriate to write about the theory itself. Demonstrate your understanding of it by actually using it.

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS/DELIVERABLES

The results of your research should be posted to your PPD blog and summarised by a 250 word statement/evaluation. You should aim to illustrate your opinions with relevant examples of contemporary design practice. All posts relating to this task should be labelled OUCE255 Task 2.

Print/Seminar Task 3- Stock Options & Print Finishing.

TASK

With a focus on stock, substrate and 'special' print finishes, find as many variants as possible of the following areas of design:

* Branding and Identity
* Packaging and Promotion
* Publishing and Editorial
* Information and Wayfinding

You should consider production values, scale and functionality in relation to appropriate contexts and target audiences and evaluate their impact on the design decisions that have been made. Where possible you should aim to collect physical/actual examples of print as this will help you to evaluate important tactile, formal, and functional elements of your source material.

Your findings should be recorded and critically evaluate on your Design Context blog.

Studio Visit Request: Blush Letterpress Printers.

After doing some research on my Design Context blog for my OUGD201 'Design Production for Print' module today, I discovered the letterpress printing company 'Blush', based in Flintshire, North Wales. Having seen and admired their work on blogs before, I was delighted to discover the creators, and contacted them re a studio visit, and now anxiously await their reply. Their design studio isn't too far from my home address (non term-time) in Shropshire, so it would be a great day out to learn more about one of my visually favourite printing finish techniques.

Enterprise Task 2- Ideas & Oppurtunities.

LECTURE II- IDEAS AND OPPORTUNITIES

* How to create/spot opportunities

IF YOU NEVER LOOK FOR OPPORTUNITIES, YOU ARE BOUND FOR FAILURE.

WHAT IS AN IDEA?

- Occurs at any time to anybody, randomly... seldom materialises.
- To see if an idea is worth pursuing, you need to develop and rationalise it.

OPPURTUNITY

- Environmental factors merge/the right conditions/the right place; the right time.
- Government, social trrends.

THE WRONG TIME

* No context
* Politically unbeneficial
* No need in society
* Technology too primitive

(Example of Leonardo Da Vinci and his developments and sketches in mechanical engineering and product design)

THE RIGHT TIME

* The opposites of above

(Example of The Concorde aircraft- helped relationships develop after WW2, economic and social developments)

The "BIG BANG" (of spotting an opportunity) is "P.E.S.T"...

Political Economic Social Technology

P.E.S.T

We have to be aware and informed about all of these areas to understand events and opportunities.
E.g... Read broadsheet newspaper once a week- for a full, global, unbiased (to an extent...) overview- be informed.

POLITICS

* Local, national, international
* Trade laws
* Tax Breaks
* Human Rights
* Legislation
