MODULE BRIEF: Personal & Professional Development 2.

Context

It is important to see this briefing as a starting point for an ongoing and increasingly individual/independent enquiry that underpins your studio practice. Your approach to this brief in relation to the rest of your work should be distinct enough to allow for a sufficient level of objective reflection but integrated enough to maintain relevance to your practical work.

Brief

You will be supported in the development and presentation of:-

* Personal Development Portfolio (PDP) in the form of a blog- through this you will need to demonstrate a reflective approach to your source material and experiences in order to develop your own opinions, ambitions and rationale towards the graphic design industry. You should be able to demonstrate an increasingly focused and informed understanding of more specific areas of creative and professional interest. See additional studio brief- 30%.

* Promotional Material- this should demonstrate your ability to select and organise examples of your practical work providing the basis for an ongoing and developing portfolio of work that can be used for gaining work placement(s). Your portfolio should be branded and be developed in both digital and print format. It should be suitable for professional presentation and distribution. See additional studio brief- 20%.

* An oral presentation to be delivered to members of your work group- you should aim to summarise your second year experience with a view to more professional and independent approaches to study in your third year. Your presentation should draw together examples of contemporary design practice and relate them to the development of your own work and oppurtunities for professional research and/or work placement. See additional studio brief- 50%.

Each of these elements should be seen as interrelated and reflect a growing independence and ability to make decisions from an increasingly informed position. You will be briefed seperately on each element.

Preperation/Research Suggestions

* You should review handouts and support material from previous PPD modules as well as Enterprise & Innovation at Level 4.
* Your portfolio should be established by your first PPD2 tutorial and added to as your work progresses.
* Maintain records of letters of enquiry, emails, and any evidence of visits, etc. in an organised file.

Visit the E-studio and digital hub for further information, research suggestions and resources.

Interim Briefing: 21/02/12
Deadline: 08/06/12

MODULE BRIEF: Innovation & Enterprise.

Context

The purpose of this brief is to enable you to develop an awareness of competition and what it takes to compete in your specialist sector.

It's a competitive world and all of us go into business whether it is for ourselves or working for a company. The skills you should learn in this module will "arm you with the deadliest weapon of all- KNOWLEDGE" (Funky Business) and give you the edge that a talented graduate needs it today's marketplace.

Brief

STUDIO BRIEF 1 (50%)

Week by week you will build a reflective blog that responds to issues presented to you in the 10 lectures and to questions that will be posted in (E-studio) Moodle. The focus of your reflections should be your own future as a practitioner and how the lessons learned in the lectures might be applied to your practice. The questions posed in the 5 study tasks will help to guide your thoughts. By Christmas, you should have developed  vision of yourself as an independent practitioner who is ready to think about being paid for the work you can do on a free-lance or collaborative basis. Blogs will be assessed on a continuous basis. See Studio Brief 1 for further information.

STUDIO BRIEF 2 (50%)

From the knowledge gained through the Enterprise lectures, online resources, study tasks and independent research, you will construct a business plan or a business proposal to present to your peers and tutors in an assessed, oral presentation. The presentation will be 8-10 minutes long. You should use appropriate visual aids and documentation to support your presentation. See Studio Brief 2 for further information.

It is essential that you refer to a range of marketing models and recognise business "start up" principles in order to gain a pass. You must make reference to the course materials, books, and web sites to demonstrate your understanding. Failure to do so will have a significant impact on the assessment of your work. Your presentation will be assessed by two members of the course team.

Preperation/Research Suggestions

* You will attend nine lecture sessions as detailed in your timetable. These take place on Monday mornings or Thursday afternoons. Registers will be taken.
* You will attend seminars with your course team and the module leader to help you in your reflections, to build a business proposal and to prepare you for the presentaiton.
* Essential texts ans web sites are listed in the handbook. There is also a list of other suggested reading. All these text books are available in the library or as handouts.

Assessed Presentations: 29/02/12
Deadline: 28/02/12

What is design for print?- Task.

Session 1- What is design for print?

TASK

Find at least 5 different examples of the effective/creative use of print in the following areas of design:

* Branding and identity
* Packaging and promotion
* Publishing and editorial
* Information and wayfinding

You should aim to identify design work from a range of commercial/cultural references, target audiences and creative contexts.

You will need to identify secondary and primary sources and not rely solely on web-based examples as this will encourage you to be more adventurous in your research and diverse in your findings. You will also gain a more informed understanding of the 'real world' context of your work.

Your findings should be recorded and critically evaluated on your Design Context blog.

Mandatory Requirements/Deliverables

A series of posts to your Design Context blog demonstrating an in depth investigation into design for print in relation to the four areas outlined.

Significant critical evaluation of the examples identified through your research including informed reasons for their selection.

OUGD201 Design Production/Print- My concept, and what I want to achieve.

Reflecting upon my concept, and what I intend to achieve.

From polls and questionnaires, I have found that Wes Anderson, himself, and his films have a great split when it comes to the knowledge of them both. Some people, like myself, are majorly fanatical about him and his work, whereas many have never heard of him, or seen his films. I intend to bridge this gap.

What I aspire to do is to create a info graphic-inspired exhibition/retrospective of Wes' work- (perhaps a hyperthetical proposal, dependent on time and cost constraints) informing people about him, what he does, and his films. I hope to inform, educate, and persuade. In order to create a more varied and experiemental body of work throughout this print-based  project, with promotional material such as tickets, posters, flyers, and mailshots, an exhibition guide and presentation book, etc.

My target audience will be adults, and film fans. Due to the ratings of Wes' films (usually 15, PG in case of 'Fantastic Mr. Fox') some adult content instantly puts the concept into a more mature market. I intend to create slick, art house-style design which will reflect the sophistication of Wes' work.

In the next week or two, all research and devlopment work will be inspired by my ambitions for the outcomes and deliverables of the project, and can be found on my Design Context blog.

What Is Good...PRINT PROJECT Feedback Considerations & Potential Concept Development.

After today's feedback session, I wrote down some important notes to develop my project and for consideration in a brain storming session.

Notes and areas of research include:

* Research necessary info: genre of film, grossing amounts (USD), nominations and awards, background- personal story of Wes Anderson.
* Bio on Wes Anderson- concise summary.
* Summary of his films- in depth story.
* Research info graphics to show corellation within auteur qualities in films, grossing amounts, popularity, etc.

Potential development and concepts...

- Packaging and branding of "collector's addition" boxset of DVD's... 15th anniversary of  Wes Anderson feature films? Consistent style, illustrative, typographic.
- Promotion- definate consideration. Few people knew about Wes' films...need to get the word out there.
- Infographic book about Wes and his films.
- Narrative and illustrative book/zine about Wes and his films.
- Infographic exhibition about Wes and his films.
- Wall vinyl character design- large scale...perhaps advertising or promoting? (Inside somewhere like 'The Core' shopping center, by HMV...prime location).

What Is Good: Group Presentation.

Fortunately got into Uni around an hour early today...fortunate as I had to make a few tweeks to the presentation (of course, not realising that my fonts wouldn't be downloaded on the GD macs...silly mistake!) These screenshots show the final version of the presentation as demonstrated within our small groups, and discussed over the 3-minute time frame, plus feedback.
Members of our discsussion group were:

* Chris Van Niekerk
* Baljeet Samra
* Mitch Weaver
* Beth Yates
* Myself (Sophie Wilson)

The feedback was as followed...
Feedback was completed by the four other members of the group, in reflection of my presentation.

HOW GOOD...? WERE YOU CONVINCED
List ideas, opinions and observations below to help develop and focus the idea.

What else is interesting about their good that hasn't been mentioned?

-What genre are his films?
-Which films made the most money?
-What awards has he won?
-What is his background?

Is there a flaw in the argument? What do you disagree with and why?

-Many people don't know who he is- raise awareness?

What processes, scenarios, or contexts might improve the potential impact of the concept?

-Know more about his films- info in context with his films.

How else might the concept by creatively improved? Any other comments...

-Correlate similar elements in different films.
-Top trumps!

Really helpful feedback from the group, and a whole new set of eyes. In my feedback, and from friends I have discussed at home, many people are familiar and fond of Wes Anderson, but to the group it was a completely new load of information. This has inspired me to not be so focused and to develop my promotion more- to get the "Wes word" out there. Great feedback.
